In 2011, the City of St. Thomas began work on a large addition to the existing courthouse. In order to construct the proposed basement structures, it was necessary to develop a box shoring system in front of the existing courthouse. RWH Engineering Inc. (RWH) proposed a multiple scope system for the project.
The five-meter deep excavation was designed utilizing a single row tieback with soldier piles and lagging for the majority of the shoring system. Conventional shotcrete underpinning was used to shore below the depth of the existing building’s footing. At 75 mm – 100 mm thick, shotcrete underpinning allows for closer excavation to existing buildings when compared to other shoring systems.
