Advent Long Term Care Facility is a 15-storey building comprised of retirement and assisted-living units. Originally designed with strip footings, a design change was needed when unexpectedly poor soils were encountered at the base of excavation in one area of the site. After a meeting with HCM and RWH, the structural engineer modelled the building for differential settlement using RWH’s helical pile design in the problem area.
Both RWH and HCM acted quickly. Shop drawings were issued within 1 week and site mobilization occurred shortly thereafter – enabling the owner to proceed with construction and avoid further schedule delays. Three sacrificial load tests were performed, proving individual pile capacities of up to 140% of the specified ULS load.
